The hospital incorporated the buildings of the former Romford Union Workhouse, built in 1838.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title= Heritage strategy for Romford )〕 The poor law union covered Barking, Cranham, Dagenham, Great Ilford, Great Warley, Havering-atte-Bower, Hornchurch, Rainham, Romford, Upminster and Wennington. In 1930 the poor law union was abolished and it became the Oldchurch County Hospital. In 1948 it became part of the National Health Service.
